Brian Buniva Joins the Richmond, Virginia Office of Eckert Seamans

Eckert Seamans Cherin and Mellott, LLC, a full-service national law firm, is pleased to announce that Brian L. Buniva has joined the firm’s environmental and litigation practices as a Member, effective July 12, 2010. He will be based in the firm’s Richmond, Virginia office. Mr. Buniva joins the firm from LeClairRyan, where he was a Shareholder. He represents public utilities, publicly traded and closely held businesses, individuals and local governments on transactional, land use development, and regulatory matters in administrative, environmental, local government and zoning law and related litigation.

Over the past thirty years, Brian Buniva has represented public utilities, publicly traded and closely held businesses, individuals, developers and local governments. He prosecutes and defends numerous permit and licensing matters before a variety of regulatory agencies including the federal Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Virginia agencies including the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Alcoholic Beverages Control Board, the Department of Environmental Quality, the Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Department of Mines, Minerals and & Energy, the Virginia Marine Resources Agency, the Department of Professions and Occupations, the Department of Health Professions, the Department of Health, the Department of Social Services, and others. Mr. Buniva guides clients in obtaining air, water, wetlands, solid and hazardous waste and other environmental permits, and assists clients in negotiating their obligations under CERCLA, RCRA, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act and all other similar state and local laws. He also advises clients on environmental matters in relation to mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and real estate transactions. Mr. Buniva has counseled and litigated on behalf of several local governments in Virginia on land use and environmental matters. In addition, he often represents developers, agricultural clients and wireless telecommunications carriers in zoning cases throughout Virginia, and land use clients in matters involving landfills, commercial and residential developments, livestock operations and other controversial issues. Under Mr. Buniva’s counsel, his clients have prevailed in every case he has handled before the Virginia Supreme Court, several of which have been precedent setting.

Active in the profession, Mr. Buniva is in his second term as an elected member of the Virginia State Bar Council, and previously served as chair of the Administrative and Environmental law sections. He is also past chair and current member of the Board of Governors of the Environmental Law Section and past chair of the Administrative Law Section of the Virginia Bar Association. Additionally, he is a member of the American Bar Association Environment, Energy & Natural Resources; Administrative; Litigation and Local Government sections. He is a member of the Bar Association of the City of Richmond (past Board Member and past chair of Environmental Law section), and the Chesterfield County – Colonial Heights Bar Association.

Mr. Buniva is consistently recognized by leading legal ranking organizations for his experience in environmental and land use matters, including Chambers USA, America’s Leading Business Lawyers, Best Lawyers in America, Virginia Super Lawyers, Madison’s Who’s Who in Law, and Virginia Business magazine as one of the state’s “Legal Elite.” He is also AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest ranking available.

Mr. Buniva earned his J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law, Graduate Program in Public Administration at American University, and A.B. in Government from Georgetown University.
